A discerning scholar is adept at diagnosing the various spiritual illnesses caused by sins and healing the illness of the heart. He tries to instill optimism in the minds of people he sees descending into hopelessness. On the other hand, he makes an effort to inculcate a profound fear of Allah in his heart if he witnesses that individual acting recklessly and fearlessly. Consequently, the scholar uses its opposite to heal illness. Ibn al-Jawzi has collected tales of prohibition and punishment that rouse people's consciences from their slumber and serve as warnings against sin. The assured person becomes uneasy; the kind person becomes more vulnerable; the grumpy person begins to cry; and the slothful person becomes motivated.
